about

On this 23-track album from 2012, Free Radicals warned Obama-era gringos about the danger of anti-immigrant hysteria. Years before Trump’s campaign focused on building walls, the musicians in Free Radicals were looking at the walls from Israel / Palestine to Texas / Mexico, and seeing exploitation and devastation.
With song titles including: “Chosen Ones,” “No State Solution,” “La Frontera,” “Third Ward Not For Sale,” “Build Levees Not Walls,” “El Muro,” “Iron Curtain,” “¡Ni Una Más!,” “Every Wall,” “Anchor Baby Hysteria,” “Badme,” “FEMA,” and “The Border Crossed Me,” the impact of borders, occupation, and gentrification was present throughout the CD. In addition, the CD cover features graffiti of anti-border messages in 11 languages (English, Spanish, German, Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Zulu, Punjabi, Bengali, and Amharic) written by the band’s friends from around the world.
The Houston Press’ 2012 Song of the Year award went to the song ‘Ben Taub Blues,’ which the band dedicates to their many fellow Houston musicians who have been treated and died in Ben Taub Hospital, including Little Joe Washington who died two years after the CD was completed. The Free Radicals’ saxophonists Jason Jackson and Pete Sullivan played with Little Joe often and Little Joe returned the favor by playing and singing on Ben Taub Blues. Also, Folasayo Dele-Ogunrinde who did a spoken word piece in Nigerian Pidgin on the track “No State Solution’ died within a few years of the CD release. Her cry for “One World, No Passports, One Human Race!” resonates more than ever in 2018.

about

Free Radicals Houston, Texas

Free Radicals sends a new collection of Palestine solidarity and anti-genocide music to the world, and to our rapper and friend Beesh in Gaza.
Without a phone, electricity, food or water, and with bombs dropping all around him and his daughter, we hope he's still alive and not in pain.
